I think anime and manga style has been in the West so long now people are starting to stop caring where it comes from. It more about execution and purpose now. While Katawa Shojo took after Japanese Visual Novels a lot (and the character set up reminded me of Key's novels) it had enough unique story points to stand by itself. The audience for VNs is dramatically increasing and the otaku faction that insist that VNs can only come from Japan is tiny in comparison. Christine is now on Steam with Analogue and the response has been good so far. Other portals like Desura are making a move to put up VNs as well. Times are changing *puffs on pipe*.
